Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncology is the area of surgery that deals with tumours and cancers. It encompasses combinations of orthopaedic, soft-tisssue, and reconstructive techniques.

Surgical Oncology

With advanced expertise in this area, CoraVets is well-positioned to explain and undertake oncologic cases of all types.

Surgical oncology focuses on treating cancer through various advanced surgical techniques, including complex mass removal to eliminate tumors with precision whilst preserving healthy tissue. It often involves reconstructive surgery, including skin grafting, to restore form and function after tumour excision. In some cases, limb or organ removal may be necessary to prevent the spread of disease and save and enhance a patient’s life. To optimise outcomes, adjunctive therapies such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and electrochemotherapy are commonly used alongside surgery, creating a comprehensive and effective cancer-management approach.

Overview of Surgical Oncology Expertise

CoraVets provides advanced oncologic surgical care for dogs and cats diagnosed with tumours or cancer-related conditions. Our surgical team, through collaboration with your primary vet and our associated oncologists, focuses on early detection, accurate diagnosis, and precise intervention to improve outcomes and maintain the highest quality of life possible for every patient. With a compassionate approach and evidence-based treatment strategies, we manage complex soft-tissue, skin, abdominal, and thoracic tumors using the latest veterinary oncology standards. Each case is individually assessed to determine the safest and most effective surgical plan.

With an honest and pragmatic approach, we promise to discuss all options available, and never to ‘sell’ a treatment, but rather to collaborate with owners and referring to vets to jointly decide what is best for each patient on an individual basis.

What We Offer

We offer a comprehensive range of surgical oncologic procedures for dogs and cats, including tumor excision (benign and malignant), lymph node removal, skin and soft-tissue mass removal, abdominal tumour surgery (splenic, liver, adrenal among others), and thoracic mass removal. We also perform reconstructive surgery when needed following tumour removal, ensuring functional and cosmetic restoration. Every surgery is planned carefully with the benefit of advanced imaging to understand tumour size, location, and spread, enabling maximum precision while protecting healthy tissue. Post-surgical cancer care, including recommendations for chemotherapy or follow-up imaging, is provided in collaboration with our afiliated oncology specialists.

Facilities

CoraVets is equipped with specialised facilities essential for safe and effective oncologic surgery. Our high-resolution CT scanner plays a critical role in tumour identification, surgical planning, and disease staging. Sterile surgical suites are designed specifically for delicate oncologic procedures, featuring advanced anesthesia delivery and monitoring systems and specialised instrumentation for precise tumour removal. After surgery, pets recover in a dedicated recovery suite with temperature control, continuous monitoring, and individualized pain-management and recovery protocols. This integrated environment ensures safe anesthesia, optimal surgical conditions, and a calm, stable, and comfortable environment for recovery of oncology patients.

Benefit of CT

High-resolution CT scanning allows accurate determination of tumour size, location, and invasion.

  • 3D imaging helps identify tumor spread to nearby and distant organs, lymph nodes, or bone.

  • CT is considered the optimal modality for accurate disease staging and determining the safest surgical approach

  • CT allows specialists to carefully plan surgical removal of disease whilst protecting healthy tissue

  • CT allows mapping of lymphatic ducts and nodes (lymphangiography) to accurately establish a surgical plan

  • CT provides fast, detailed imaging studies that support timely treatment decisions for oncology patients
